Hi...
My name is Mike Taylor, and I found your Web-Page today. Almost made tears come to my eyes, as a LOT of very old memories came back to life.
I was stationed in Heidwinkle from Jan. of '66, and served at Bahrdorf, until the site was closed in favor of Schoeningen. (was a REALLY big mistake) I was a TR (Russian transcriber).
I spent my time all over the border from Jan '66 until Jan '70, when I (unfortunately) got "promoted" back to the Rock, Field Station (we were no longer the 319th Btn) Hqs, and took over as  USASAFS Rothwesten NCOIC of Voice. I remained at Rothwesten 'til Jan of '72, when I rotated back to the States.
Guess I must of liked it, cuz I've been living in Kassel, Germany since Sept of '72. (Only about 15-20 minutes by car from Rothwesten)
Drop me a line if you'd like. You're the 1st person I've found who goes back further than I do.
                                             Mike Taylor

Hi;
I' Jim Fuhs and was with the 114th and 331st  from about August '49 through May '52  Was in Herzo, Hof and Giessen.  While there, became very close to a Buel Clark (Clark to me).  We came back to the states together in May '52.  He went home to Zanesville, Ohio, and me to western Iowa and Omaha.  I was best man at his wedding in Late '52 .  His first born was named after me, and I was his baptismal sponsor.  When I got married in '55 to a Geri Feller in Omaha, I asked that he be my best man.  At the time for some reason, he couldn't make it.

We corresponded regularly.  Clark had a second child, a girl and his wife Delores was with child when he was killed in an auto accident in August '57.  When we had our first child, he was named Clark after Buel.  After his death we corresponded with his wife for about two to three years, then as things go, we lost contact. In August of last year I got a letter from Jim Clark asking if I was the one who knew his Dad.  He went through the white pages of the web and sent letters to all the Jim Fuhs' listed, plus quite a few Fuhs' in the Omaha area.  We have been corresponding ever since.  His wife, Denise, is from the San Jose area of California.  My son, Clark, works in San Jose.  While they were visiting her folks they were able to get together  with Clark and  his wife Barb.  We, Jim and his wife, Denise are planning on getting together in the near future. Jim has gotten me interested in the ASA group and at present, we are planning on making the Las Vegas reunion.  My wife has wanted to go to Las Vegas, so I guess now is the time.

I viewed the pictures of the 1998 reunion, and would not have recognized Russ Case and Bob Blitz.  Clarence France, I might have.   Do remember other others such as Shir and Wendall Allen, Clair Peters, Delaney, Gregory, Elmier, Bittner and a few others.  I did send Jim Clark about 7 or 8 rolls of film that I had taken in Germany.  He has made quite a few copies.  One other thing... Does anyone know what happened to a Donald Olson.  He was a Sergeant in '52 and don't know when he came back to the states.  His wife was in Germany with him on that tour.  I was from Michigan, and I heard later that we went into Helicopter training and might have been sent to Korea.  If anyone knows would appreciate an e-mail.   Thanks a lot, and will follow the web sites closely.

Dear Dean

WOW! I just finished reviewing your web site dedicated to the 114th Sig Svc Co/331st CR Co. Congratulations!

I have been doing research on the history of the US Army in Europe for over two decades and have had the pleasure of reading about and talking to vets about the "old days" on many occasions. Your web site with its
wealth of "visual" aids really made me feel like I had been to those remote sites and met those GIs.  What a wonderful job you have done!

As part of my research I have compiled several maps that I have provided to web sites that deal with EUCOM or USAREUR related topics. I am submitting a few examples for your review. Should you be interested, I would love to create a map or two for your web site showing the locations of all of the "remote sites" operated by the 331st (and others if so desired).

In any case, good luck and keep up the excellent work. Your efforts are appreciated by us "historians". Your site is a great tribute to the efforts and sacrifices made by so many soldiers during the Cold War.

Have a very Merry Christmas and a great New Year.

Dear Dean--

I recently discovered your Website, which is excellent and brings back many memories.  I was stationed at Bahrdorf during the summer of 1954.  I and another fellow, Art Spaulding, were assigned to the 331st CR CO in late July, 1954.  We worked as German-language voice interceptors (all the other guys were trained in Russian or in Morse).  Art and I remained with 331 CR for a couple weeks after it returned to Giessen for the winter.  Then we
were reassigned, in December 1954, back to our previous job as German-English translators with our former detachment in Frankfurt and Berlin.

Unfortunately, I don't recall many of the people you mention--time takes its toll.  But I couldn't find one name listed anywhere, a name I clearly recall.  It is Lieutenant Tom Foster,  who was the CO of the Bahrdorf group. Perhaps one reason I don't recall many names is because I spent practically all my off-duty time away from the encampment.  During the summer of 54, the town of Bahrdorf was off-limits for all of us.  Thus some of us tended to
congregate down the hill at the Gasthaus during the week and on weekends, if we couldn't get a pass into Braunschweig.  Since I speak and understand German, I was able to establish friendly relationships with some of the local people, especially with Mutti and Rudi who ran the Gasthaus.  I was often called on to act as interpreter, since most of the locals had little, if any, fluency in English--beyond the usual bar room basics.  My colleague,
Art, tended to be more of an introvert;  he preferred to stay up on the hill and play cards or write letters.

In my archives, I recently came across numerous documents from my Army career, such as orders etc. showing my movements between duty stations.  One document in particular may be of interest to you.  It is Orders Number 44
from the 331st CR Company, dated 10 October 1954.  It is a list of people being promoted from PVT-2 to PFC.  I believe you are on this list as PVT-2 GILBERT  D  SLAGLE,  RA 13471286.  Am I correct?  I regret that I have no immediate personal recollection of you, but I'm sure our paths crossed more than once during that summer.

Enough for now.  I'd like to reminisce further about Bahrdorf if you're interested.

Sincerely,   Don

Dean: I Scanned a few Black and Whites from Kassel. I can not identify many of the people in the pictures. Odonnell was easy, because he came from New England. J.C.Carroll shows up in many of these, as does Duncan McIntire, The "Thinker" on the steps of the barracks was the T/A man on our shift, He's from Calif. but his name escapes me. Also most of the "Party Goers" are unknown names, but I do Remember that the young lady at the table was married to the Gent aside of her. Sorry I'm so bad on names, but I had not even looked at these pictures until I saw the Web-site. May have more, but I Think they are colored slides, and I Will have to look for them, also have trouble scanning slides. Sorry I have not seen or heard from anyone, except Sylander since I left the unit.

Dean

Have made a concentrated effort last couple of days to find the following: Ronald Bray, Jackie Flinchum, John Hagamon, Jim Bumgardner, Win Busby, John Carroll, James Jackson, Bob Keener he is the one pictured in my photo with Phil Pettit and his now wife, Helga), Don Mills (he was my best man and is pictured with my parents and us in Giessen when we got married the first time in the Standesamt. Church wedding came few days later), John Coyle, Paul Doyle, Duncan McIntyre, Herb Tobias, George Harrison (used tolive in Jerome, I believe), Jason Albino, James Owens & Claude Nardy.

I went down over the xmas list very carefully and made a list.
I found Tobias and Hagamon. There are hundreds of Mills. Hagamon said Carroll is in Florida. I'll keep trying. Very time consuming, but with the new decreased phone rates, not very expensive. In the picture in front of my tent you have on the web bottom left is Carroll, upper left I believe McIntyre. I'll get the namaes to you later.

Jim

Dean,

Just finished a review of your website and can see the changes.

I was just looking at some familiar names and had a few comments.  Bill Fleischauer came to the 332d as a trick chief (058).  George DeHaven and I had been trying to locate him with no luck, now I see why.

You can add to the Taps list:  Willard D Wilson.  I served Don Wilson in England 1963-1965, and worked with him after retirement at Lockheed Sanders in NH, we were both engineer instructors.  Don eventually ended up in San Diego where he passed earlier this year.

Miles Hughes, also on Taps, was a motor sergeant with the 330th in Korea, 1954-1955.  Retired to Ransom, Kentucky;  spoke with him a few times before he went.  Miles was a good motor sergeant, and a real character.

Looking at the '51 Xmas list, I see M/Sgt Paul Rounds.  He made warrant officer and came to the 332d.

Israel Sternberg came to Scheyern with Capt. Eldon J Burgett and led 1/2 of the company out to Herzo Base on the way to becoming the 332d.  I served as Burgett's 1st Sgt in Korea.  I sailed home from Germany in 1950 with Sternberg, and as surprised when he joined us.

Pete Ballyk of course any good 058 knows.
Sfc James Shannon also made WO and joined the 332d.
Sfc Joe Newell also made WO and joined the 332d.

Looking at your 1953 Thanksgiving Day roster:
Sgt. Michael J. Burke was my mess sergeant in the 330th in Korea.  Lost track of Michael.
Lt. Eugene Walter.  I worked with him when he was a Capt. in the field operations branch at Ft. Devens.  Saw Gene several times at the VHFS picnics.    You can add him to the taps roster also.

Talk with you later.  JimC  ( Jim Clinton   asa1sg@aol.com)

Dean: I am enjoying your web page, and was glad to see my father's name on the 1952 roster: Buel Clark. He died in 1957 in an auto accident near our home in Newark, Ohio. I would sure like to get in touch with members of the unit who knew him during his ASA days. Jim Clark (jim-anne-clark@worldnet.att.net), Severna Park MD

Dean; Just reviewed Your web site on the 331 comm. recon co. It brought back many good memories. I was with the company in 1954 and remember all the things you mention, especially the night of the red alert. We didn't know whether we were going to ship out or fight or what. I was down town at the party when they came in and pulled us all back to camp. If I remember correctly anyone who was at the party was in no shape to do much of anything. I was a radio operator on "CHARLIE" trick. Some of the guys on our trick were Dinny Stores, John Mullen, Skip Waltersdorf, Ray Blair, Kris Krystophiak (I don't think that is spelled correctly), Jim Bumgardner, Al Nemrow, Marty Heiland, Don Mills, Tiny (I don't remember his full name), these are some I can immediatly remember I could probably come up with more.

Someone on the web site wants info from people stationed at Wessendorf/Gifforn. I moved to that site in the fall of 1954 and was there until the end of 1955. I would be glad to give them as much information as I can if you could let me know where to send it. I remember those days very fondly and would gladly relive them if I could. I especially remember the many days (and nights) that we spent in Braunschweig. If I can help you with any information during this time period let me know. ( I also remember the months we spent in Geissen). If you have any information on any of the guys I mentioned above I would appreciate it. Also If anyone spent any time in Braunschweig I would like to hear from them. My name is Jim Knaub and my E-mail address is knaubj@gte.net
