Bamberg Germany

332nd Communications Reconnaissance Company

Warner Barracks

The Kaserne is in the eastern end of the city of Bamberg along a main street that leads East towards the East German border. (name of street is not known) The first building that the company occupied was beside the southern entrance/exit gate and the southern most rooms had a view of the street. The mess hall was a low building in front of that building. Bamberg is about 190 km East of Frankfurt.

In late 1954 or early 1955, the company moved to larger quarters further inside the Kaserne. See Warner Barracks below.

Behind the mess hall there was an area were 155mm artillery cannons were parked and near our motor pool tanks were parked. These belonged to the 2nd Armored Calvary (2nd AC). They occupied the main part of the Kaserne.

The operations site was to the South of the Kaserne. The road to Nuremberg was on the western side of the site. There were several 2.5 ton trucks with huts/vans where all work was done. In the beginning, we had no public electrical service and motor driven generators were used to produce electricity for the site. We had a BC610 transmitter that was located in a wooded area North of the Kaserne. The radio receivers that were used at that time were BC342's. They were old and needed calibrating constantly. There were tanks parked near the operations area.

There were good services within the Kaserne, a good PX, a gym, medical services and a theater with hobby activities. It was surprising how comfortable the red brick buildings were to live in after only living in the wooden barracks in the USA, built during World War II.
