Luise Maerkert Howell, Altefeld Germany

This page is dedicated to Luise Maerkert, who was a 5 year old girl living in Altefeld Germany in 1955 and 1956 when the 332nd was there. Lusie found our web pages and was nice enough to send me emails with her story. I regard these emails and 2 pictures as very valuable additions to the Altefeld story. Lusie's 2 brothers are also a part of the story. Luise lives in Hershey, Pa. now and her 2 brothers in Kitzingen, Germany between  Wurzburg and Bamberg.

Following is the content of 2 emails that I received from Luise.

Dear Mr. Temple

I would like to thank you for posting the pictures from Altefeld Germany. My Father was the local gardner that supplied the guys at Haus Eschwege with fresh produce.

I remember Sgt Foster very well, he took pictures of me playing in the field across from Haus Eschwege. I still cherish those pictures today.

I also live in Pennsylvania now, in Hershey to be exact. Thanks again for a glimpse into a time so long ago.

Dear Mr. Temple

Sorry that I don't remember you from Altefeld, but I was only 5 years old when you were stationed there. I think you were at my house, if that is you in the picture with my Father and Lt. Foster. I am also enclosing a picture of the house I lived in, my Father and Mother seemed to include a lot of American Soldiers into out daily life.

I have not been back to Altefeld since I left there, we moved to Bavaria when I was ten and I guess I considered that home.

I came to the states in 1978 and applied for and was granted citizenship in 1984. I go back to Germany every few years to visit my brothers, they both live there with their families. My older brother sent me the pictures I am enclosing.

And I remembered something else. Haus Eschwege used to be a veterans home before the army took it over, so maybe the strange paintings in the basement were made by German soldiers returned home from the war.

Its so strange, my siblings and I have talked more about Altefeld in the last week than we had in a lifetime before. And Lt Foster had a ranch in Montana, my older brother seems to remember that.

Well thats it for today. I am glad that receiving my e-mail made you remember a nice place in Germany. I will stay in contact.

Luise Howell

Luise and her family moved to Kitzingen in Bavaria, west of Bamberg, a few years after I left Altefeld in 1956.

The first  picture is from Lusie's home, 2 U.S. Soldiers and Luise's Father from the left

The second picture is Luise's house in Altefeld
